Jakarta Aquarium & Safari: A Journey Through Conservation and Discovery

A Vision for Conservation and Education

Jakarta Aquarium & Safari, Indonesia’s first indoor animal conservation center, was inaugurated on October 16, 2018, by Ibu Susi Pudjiastuti, the then Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries. This groundbreaking project was born out of a collaboration between Taman Safari Indonesia and Aquaria KLCC from Malaysia, with the mission of combining entertainment, education, and conservation in one immersive experience.

From the very beginning, Jakarta Aquarium & Safari was designed to bring people closer to the wonders of nature, offering a space where families, students, and wildlife enthusiasts could learn about Indonesia’s rich biodiversity while enjoying an unforgettable experience.

An Aquatic and Terrestrial Wonderland

Located within Neo Soho Mall in West Jakarta, this one-hectare facility houses more than 3,500 species of aquatic and non-aquatic animals. Unlike conventional aquariums, Jakarta Aquarium & Safari is a multi-sensory experience, featuring a mix of marine, freshwater, and land creatures that showcase the diverse ecosystems of Indonesia and beyond.

Visitors can come face-to-face with fascinating creatures, such as:

  • The Giant Grouper, one of the largest reef-dwelling fish in the world

  • The Humboldt Penguin, a species from the South American coast

  • The Sea Dragon, a rare and mesmerizing marine species

  • The Otters, playful and intelligent mammals that delight visitors with their antics

Each species is carefully cared for by expert animal keepers who provide daily educational talks and feeding sessions, making the experience even more interactive.

Exploring the Themed Zones: A Trip Across Ecosystems

Jakarta Aquarium & Safari is divided into several thematic zones, each designed to transport visitors to a unique environment:

1. Deep Diving Zone

Explore the mysterious depths of the ocean and witness the beauty of deep-sea creatures. This section showcases bioluminescent species, colorful coral reefs, and large marine predators in massive viewing tanks.

2. Island of Indonesia Zone

Indonesia is home to some of the world’s most unique wildlife. This zone highlights local aquatic species, emphasizing the importance of preserving Indonesia’s marine biodiversity.

3. Indonesia Rain Forest Zone

Step into the lush world of Indonesia’s tropical forests! This area is home to land-dwelling creatures, from exotic amphibians to small mammals, showing how different ecosystems are interconnected.

4. Jellyfish Magic Zone

A breathtaking display of graceful, glowing jellyfish, this zone mesmerizes visitors with interactive lighting effects that showcase these delicate yet fascinating marine animals.

5. Touch Pool Experience

A highlight for kids and families, this interactive zone allows visitors to touch and interact with marine life, including starfish, sea cucumbers, and bamboo sharks, under the guidance of trained staff.

More Than Just an Aquarium: A Commitment to Conservation

Beyond providing entertainment, Jakarta Aquarium & Safari is dedicated to conservation. The facility plays a vital role in promoting awareness and action for wildlife protection through:

  • Educational Programs – Schools and students are invited to learn about marine conservation, biodiversity, and sustainability through hands-on activities and guided tours.

  • Lautku Bersih Initiative – A program encouraging people to protect Indonesia’s oceans and coastal environments through community clean-ups and awareness campaigns.

  • Breeding and Rehabilitation Efforts – The aquarium participates in breeding programs for endangered species to help preserve their populations.
